Thepresidentpost.id - On the sidelines of the World Climate Action Summit (WCAS) COP28, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Friday (12/11) held a bilateral meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Dubai, the UAE.

During the meeting, President Jokowi conveyed that Indonesia has been successful in reducing emissions by improving control over deforestation as well as forest degradation. He has also deplored several European countries’ doubt about Indonesia’s commitment to preserving forests and the environment.

“I believe Norway will provide an objective view, particularly on the discriminatory European Union Deforestation Regulation, which significantly affected 16 million people, most of whom are smallholder farmers,” the President said.

In addition, the two leaders also embarked on opportunities for investment cooperation between Indonesia and Norway by carrying on their commitment on the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) immediately and support Indonesia develop the Nusantara Capital (IKN) as a smart forest city.

“Norway’s experience in developing Oslo is well-known to the global community and will be highly valuable for the development of the Nusantara Capital,” the Head of State said.

Furthermore, the President also encouraged the Norwegian PM to contribute in bringing peace in Palestine.

“I look forward to Norway, as a facilitator of the Oslo Accords, to contribute to find solutions so that the peace process can start immediately based on a two-state solution,” President Jokowi remarked.

For the record, PM Støre announced a results-based contribution of US$100 million for Indonesia’s deforestation reduction performance in 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 at the COP28 and the contribution will continue to be made, including for the performance in 2019/2020, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022. Last year, Norway contributed US$56 million for Indonesia’s deforestation reduction performance in 2016/2017.
