INDUSTRY.co.id - Tangerang - The national ceramic industry is said to have entered the self-sufficiency phase after experiencing a surge in production capacity in recent years.
Asosiasi Aneka Industri Keramik Indonesia (ASAKI) even claims the additional capacity created is far beyond the highest import volume ever in Indonesia.
Ketua Asosiasi Aneka Industri Keramik Indonesia (ASAKI) Edy Suyanto stated, the national ceramic industry is currently able to meet all the needs of the domestic market independently without relying on imports.
According to Edy, the increase in production capacity that has occurred in recent years is a strong indicator that the Indonesian ceramic industry has reached the stage of self-sufficiency.
"The ceramics industry has experienced a period of self-sufficiency. We are not defeated, we can even say that we are not self-sufficient in rice," Edy said in the 2026 Ceramics event at NICE PIK 2, Tangerang, Thursday (4/6).
He explained that the national ceramic industry had increased production capacity by 134 million square meters. In addition, in the period 2027-2029there will be an addition of new capacity reaching 56 million square meters.
Thus, the total capacity increase of the ceramic industry during the 2020-2029 period is estimated to reach 190 million square meters or an increase of about 35 percent.
According to Edy, this figure is very significant when compared to the highest ceramic imports in Indonesia's history which occurred in 2024 amounting to 78 million square meters.
"The increase in capacity of 190 million square meters is equivalent to about 2.5 times the highest import figure in history that occurred in 2024 of 78 million square meters," he said.
Edy assessed that this condition proves that the national ceramic industry now has the ability to meet all the needs of the domestic market.
"This means that today we are able to meet all domestic needs, even without exports," he said.
ASAKI is optimistic that strengthening production capacity will further enhance the competitiveness of the Indonesian ceramic industry amid global trade challenges, including competition with imported products and pressure due to excess world production capacity.
In addition to strengthening the domestic market, the capacity increase is also considered to open greater opportunities for industry players to expand export penetration and strengthen Indonesia's position as one of the largest ceramic producers in the world.
