What Is AEM Water Electrolysis
Anion exchange membrane electrolysis (AEM electrolysis) is considered a promising technology for the production of clean hydrogen. It combines lower-cost materials and non-critical metals with high operational flexibility. This can facilitate the integration of electricity from renewable energies and contribute to lowering hydrogen production costs.
MoU Framework and Joint Development
Asahi Kasei and P2H2 are already working together on the joint development of AEM water electrolysis technologies. The memorandum of understanding now signed creates the framework for more closely linking the competencies of both companies. While P2H2 brings its expertise in AEM electrolysis, Asahi Kasei contributes its experience in electrolysis, manufacturing, and market introduction. The goal is to evaluate the prerequisites for the future production and commercial use of AEM water electrolysis systems.
“This memorandum of understanding is an important step in unlocking the commercial potential of next-generation water electrolysis technologies,” said Kenji Takeda, Lead Executive Officer of Asahi Kasei and head of the company’s Green Solution Project. “P2H2 has comprehensive expertise in AEM technology, while Asahi Kasei brings its strengths in manufacturing and commercialization. Together, we want to evaluate the opportunities and challenges of AEM water electrolysis and advance its market introduction.”
Asahi Kasei Hydrogen Strategy
Asahi Kasei views hydrogen as an important strategic growth area. The company has decades of experience in electrolysis and holds a strong market position in chlor-alkali electrolysis. Through large-scale hydrogen demonstration projects in Japan and Germany, Asahi Kasei has also built extensive competencies in the hydrogen sector. In parallel with the further development of its existing technologies, the company is examining future technologies such as AEM water electrolysis to support long-term expected market growth.
